Overview
Canyoning La Fortuna: Five rappels, three waterfalls, and two rainforest ziplines — building up to an approximately 60-meter waterfall descent.
A Waterfall Adventure That Builds Your Confidence
Looking for a canyoning tour in La Fortuna that combines waterfalls, rappelling, and ziplining? Maquique Adventure takes you into a rainforest canyon for an active experience that starts with smaller descents and gradually builds toward the biggest waterfall of the day.
You'll complete five rappels, encounter three waterfalls, and cross the rainforest on two ziplines measuring approximately 160 and 400 meters.
What makes this experience particularly interesting is how the route progresses. Instead of starting with the most challenging descent, you'll have time to learn the technique, get comfortable with the equipment, and build confidence along the way.
No previous rappelling experience is required for eligible participants.
Start Small, Build Confidence
Your adventure begins with professional guides explaining the equipment, body positioning, braking technique, and basic instructions you'll use throughout the canyon.
The first rappels introduce you to the experience before the route progresses toward larger descents.
As you move through the canyon, you'll encounter waterfalls, wet rocks, and natural rainforest terrain. The experience requires active participation, but the progressive route gives first-time canyoners an opportunity to learn before facing the biggest challenge.
Your guides provide instructions throughout the adventure.
Five Rappels, Three Waterfalls, and Two Ziplines
This is more than a traditional waterfall rappelling tour.
Between the descents, you'll also experience two rainforest ziplines, approximately 160 and 400 meters long, adding a different kind of adventure to the route.
The combination of rappelling, canyon exploration, and ziplining makes this an interesting choice if you want to experience several adventure elements without booking separate activities.
The Final Challenge: A 60-Meter Waterfall
The route builds toward its biggest descent: an approximately 60-meter (197-foot) waterfall rappel.
By the time you reach it, you'll have completed the earlier rappels and practiced the techniques introduced by your guides.
It's the defining challenge of Maquique's signature canyoning experience and one of the main reasons to consider this particular route.
After completing the adventure, you'll enjoy an included traditional Costa Rican lunch.
Is This Canyoning Experience Right for You?
We recommend Maquique to travelers who enjoy active outdoor experiences and want to try waterfall rappelling in a guided setting.
It's particularly worth considering if:
- You're trying canyoning for the first time and appreciate a route that progresses gradually.
- You want a combination of waterfalls, rappelling, and ziplining.
- You're traveling with adventurous friends, as a couple, or with family members who meet the participation requirements.
- You prefer an active rainforest experience rather than a sightseeing-focused excursion.
Although beginners are welcome, canyoning involves heights, water, wet surfaces, and uneven terrain. You should be comfortable participating in a physically active outdoor adventure and following your guides' instructions.
The operator advertises a minimum age of five years. For younger children near that limit, participation must be confirmed in advance based on individual suitability and canyon conditions.
Our Local Take
When comparing canyoning tours in La Fortuna, we think the most important difference isn't simply how many waterfalls a tour includes. It's how the experience is organized and whether it matches your comfort level.
Maquique's progressive route is a meaningful advantage for travelers who are curious about rappelling but haven't tried it before.
The two ziplines also add variety, making this a useful option if you'd like a taste of both canyoning and ziplining during your stay in Arenal.
If you're considering waterfall rappelling in La Fortuna, this is an experience worth comparing with the other canyoning options in the area.
