Hanging bridges are one of the classic ways to experience Arenal, but for us, the real value isn't simply crossing the bridges.

It's what happens when you slow down between them.

With a private naturalist guide, this experience becomes a walk through different levels of the rainforest — from shaded trails near the forest floor to elevated bridges where you're suddenly looking across the canopy instead of up at it.

If wildlife, photography or simply having more time to observe are important to you, this is the way we prefer to experience Mistico.

Why We Recommend This One

Mistico is beautiful on its own, but it's also the kind of place where you can walk past a surprising amount without realizing it.

A movement high in the branches, an unusual shape between leaves or a distant bird call can be easy to miss when you're concentrating on the trail.

That's why we particularly like doing the hanging bridges with a naturalist guide.

Your guide isn't there to rush you from one bridge to the next. The goal is to read the forest along the way, stop when something catches attention and use binoculars or a spotting scope when wildlife is difficult to see with the naked eye.

And because the experience is private, those stops happen around your group, not a shared-tour schedule.

What the Experience Feels Like

After pickup from your hotel or vacation rental in the Arenal area, you travel to Mistico Hanging Bridges, approximately 20 minutes from La Fortuna.

The main trail covers about 3.2 km / 2 miles through maintained rainforest paths.

At first, much of the forest is above you.

As the trail gradually rises, that perspective begins to change.

Across the route you'll encounter 16 bridges, including six suspension bridges, with some elevated sections reaching approximately 45 meters above the forest floor.

That changing height is one of the things we enjoy most about the experience. You aren't seeing the same forest for two or three hours — you're gradually moving through different layers of it.

Your guide watches and listens along the way for wildlife.

Monkeys, sloths, tropical birds, reptiles and many smaller rainforest species live in the reserve, but this is a natural environment and sightings vary every day.

We never recommend choosing this experience with a wildlife checklist in mind.

Instead, come prepared to slow down and see what the forest gives you that morning.

On clearer days, openings between the trees may also reveal Arenal Volcano. On cloudy days, the forest itself remains the reason to be here.

The bridges move slightly when people cross them. Guests with significant discomfort around suspension bridges should keep this in mind.

Your guide will actively look for animals, but no specific sighting can be guaranteed.

A Small Tip From Us

Choose an earlier departure when possible.

The weather around Arenal can change quickly, and mornings are generally more comfortable for walking. We also like having more time to pause for wildlife before the park becomes busier later in the day.

Bring a lightweight rain jacket even when the morning looks clear, and wear closed-toe shoes with good grip. Shaded rainforest sections can stay damp.
