Overview
Start with an Arenal Volcano Hike through forest trails near the volcano.
Then enjoy a traditional lunch before soaking in a naturally heated river.
This approximately six-hour shared experience combines an active walk with a simple thermal stop. Transportation, entrance fees, lunch, bottled water, insurance, and a bilingual guide are included.
You will travel with other visitors and follow the group’s scheduled pace throughout the day.
What you’ll experience
We begin collecting participants from hotels around La Fortuna before the scheduled 10:20 a.m. departure. Several pickup stops may be required, depending on where everyone is staying.
Once the group is together, we drive toward the volcano area. Your guide then leads the Arenal Volcano Hike along natural rainforest trails.
During the walk, you will learn about the volcano, the surrounding ecosystem, and the way past eruptions shaped the landscape. Stops are shared among the group, so the guide balances explanations, rest breaks, and questions from all participants.
The complete walking section is described as roughly three hours. It includes approximately two hours toward the volcano’s base, followed by an hour descending toward a green lagoon.
Expect uneven ground, inclines, exposed roots, and changing trail conditions. Rain can make some sections slippery, so closed hiking shoes are necessary.
Arenal Volcano may appear clearly between the trees, or clouds may hide it completely. Visibility changes quickly and cannot be guaranteed.
After completing the Arenal Volcano Hike, we stop for an included traditional Costa Rican lunch. This is a scheduled group meal, so the menu and timing follow the day’s arrangements.
Our final stop is El Choyin, a naturally heated section of the Tabacón River. Warm water moves between rocks and forest vegetation, creating an informal place to soak after the hike.
This is a natural river setting, not a developed thermal resort. Expect rocks, changing water levels, limited facilities, and other visitors sharing the area.
Bring your swimsuit and towel in a separate bag. Wet rocks can be slippery, and personal belongings remain your responsibility while you are in the water.
The scheduled finish is around 3:30 p.m. Traffic, hotel drop-offs, weather, and the group’s walking speed can affect the actual return time.
Our local recommendation
Eat breakfast before departure. The Arenal Volcano Hike comes before lunch, and the exact meal time depends on the group’s walking pace.
Wear your hiking clothes at the start of the day. Keep your swimsuit packed underneath or somewhere easy to reach.
Changing facilities near a natural river may be basic or unavailable. A waterproof bag is useful for storing wet clothes after the soak.
Bring a lightweight rain jacket even during the drier months. Conditions near Arenal Volcano can change quickly.
Is this for you?
Choose this experience when you want an Arenal Volcano Hike, lunch, and a thermal river in one organized outing.
It works well for solo travelers, couples, and budget-conscious visitors who enjoy meeting other people. It also keeps the day simple by combining transport, guiding, entrance fees, and food.
The guide may be responsible for up to 15 participants. Explanations, rest stops, wildlife observations, and access to the guide are shared among the group.
The itinerary follows a fixed schedule. Everyone normally stays together, so extended photography stops or major changes in pace may not be possible.
This experience may not suit travelers who need frequent individual assistance. It is also not recommended for people with heart conditions or significant mobility limitations.
