Overview
When the Forest Gets Dark, Everything Changes
A coffee and chocolate farm feels completely different after sunset.
The trails become quieter, the sounds change, and animals that are easy to miss during the day begin to move through the vegetation.
That's why we like Don Juan's Night Walk & Chocolate Experience as something more than just an evening activity.
You start by exploring the property with a local guide, looking for nocturnal wildlife and learning how the forest changes after dark.
Then the experience takes an unexpected turn.
Instead of finishing when the nature walk ends, you move into the world of cacao, create your own chocolate bar, and slow things down with coffee and chocolate tasting.
Nature first. Chocolate afterward.
It's a combination we don't see very often — and that's exactly why we think it's worth considering.
Why We Recommend It
Most guests naturally fill their Arenal days with volcano hikes, waterfalls, rafting, hanging bridges and hot springs.
But evenings are often left completely open.
This is one of the reasons we like this experience.
It lets you use a couple of hours after sunset without committing to another long or physically demanding activity.
And unlike a traditional night walk that ends when the wildlife search is over, Don Juan adds something completely different at the end: you make your own chocolate bar.
That small twist gives the experience more personality.
It also makes it easier to recommend to families or groups where not everyone is equally enthusiastic about spending two hours only looking for frogs and insects.
First, Let Your Eyes Adjust
Once the walk begins, the goal isn't to cover a lot of distance.
It's to notice what's different.
Your guide uses the property and surrounding vegetation to look for animals that become more active at night and to explain how different species use the forest after sunset.
The operator mentions possible sightings such as frogs, sloths, raccoon-like mammals, toucans and other wildlife.
But we would treat every sighting as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
This is still nature.
Some nights are very active. Others make you work harder for every animal you find.
And that's part of the experience.
Then the Night Gets Sweeter
After the wildlife walk, the focus shifts from the forest to cacao.
This is the part that makes the experience especially memorable for us.
Instead of simply tasting finished chocolate, you get involved in creating your own chocolate bar.
It's hands-on, easygoing and a nice contrast to the quiet concentration of the night walk.
The experience finishes with coffee and chocolate tasting, giving everyone time to sit, compare flavors and relax before heading back to their accommodation.
For families, this second half can be particularly useful.
Children who may have spent the walk quietly searching the trees suddenly have something they can make, touch and eventually taste.
Our Host Take
Best for
Families, couples, multigenerational groups and guests looking for something different to do after sunset.
Why we like it
It combines two experiences that normally have very little to do with each other: nocturnal nature and chocolate making.
Best scheduling advantage
It uses your evening rather than taking another morning or afternoon away from your itinerary.
Family advantage
The wildlife walk is followed by a hands-on chocolate activity, which gives the experience variety.
Accessibility advantage
The operator uses paved and covered trails designed to accommodate wheelchairs and baby strollers.
Rain advantage
Because much of the route is covered, normal Arenal rain doesn't automatically make the experience uncomfortable.
Good to know
This is not a strenuous jungle night hike. If you're looking for a rugged trail deep in the forest, we'd recommend a different night-walk experience.
Day Tour or Night Experience?
Guests sometimes ask us which Don Juan experience we'd choose.
The answer depends on what you're hoping to get from it.
Choose Coffee & Chocolate 2-in-1 if...
Your priority is learning about both coffee and cacao, understanding their production and spending more time on the cultural and agricultural side of the experience.
Choose Night Walk & Chocolate if...
Your daytime itinerary is already busy and you want wildlife after dark + a hands-on chocolate experience.
The coffee component here is mainly a tasting at the end rather than the central subject of the tour.
Our recommendation:
Don't choose the night experience because it's simply “the same tour later.”
Choose it because you want a different kind of evening in La Fortuna.
Is This a Good Fit for Your Stay?
We'd Recommend It If...
- You're looking for something interesting to do after sunset.
- Your daytime schedule is already full.
- You enjoy wildlife but don't want a demanding night hike.
- You're traveling with children or several generations.
- Making your own chocolate sounds more interesting than simply tasting it.
- Accessibility matters for someone in your group.
- You want an approximately two-hour activity rather than a full evening commitment.
- You're looking for something a little less obvious than another daytime attraction.
We'd Consider Another Option If...
- You want a long, rugged rainforest night hike.
- Your only priority is seeing as many nocturnal species as possible.
- You're looking primarily for an in-depth coffee experience.
- You want a private wildlife guide dedicated exclusively to your group.
- You expect guaranteed sightings of frogs, sloths or other animals.

A Small Tip From Us
Wear long, lightweight clothing and closed-toe shoes.
Even though the paths are paved and covered, you're still outside at night in a tropical environment.
We also recommend using insect repellent before the walk.
And if you enjoy wildlife photography, bring your camera or phone — but don't let trying to get the perfect picture make you miss what the guide is showing you.
The operator specifically recommends insect repellent, comfortable clothing, closed shoes and, for the night tour, fuller-coverage clothing.
