Overview
This Private Hanging Bridges tour gives you two very different sides of Arenal in one day.
First, you walk the rainforest from ground level to the canopy.
Then, you descend into the La Fortuna Waterfall canyon.
After that, we slow down over a Costa Rican lunch at a local organic farm.
What you'll experience
We start with private pickup at your hotel or vacation rental near La Fortuna. Your exact pickup time is confirmed after booking, since drive times depend on your location.
Once everyone is ready, we head toward Mistico Hanging Bridges. The drive itself gives you a first look at the volcano, farms, forest edges, and Lake Arenal area.
At Mistico, our private naturalist guide sets the pace. You are not following a large group or rushing from bridge to bridge. We stop when wildlife appears, when the light is right, or when your group wants more time.
The main trail covers about 3.2 km / 2 miles through rainforest. It includes 15 bridges, with fixed bridges and hanging bridges built across different forest levels.
This is where the private format matters. Our guide uses trained eyes and viewing gear to look for sloths, monkeys, toucans, frogs, snakes, insects, and small birds. Sightings depend on weather, time of day, and animal movement.
Then the trail rises and opens in sections. On clear days, you may see Arenal Volcano framed above the forest. On cloudy days, the walk feels more focused on sound, movement, and small details in the canopy.
After the bridges, we continue to La Fortuna Waterfall. This part of the day feels completely different. Instead of walking above the forest, you descend into a steep green canyon.
The waterfall drops about 70 meters / 230 feet into the canyon below. To reach the base, we walk down more than 500 steps. The descent is steady, but the climb back up is the part most guests remember.
Once we reach the bottom, you can take photos, sit near the river, or swim in the permitted areas when conditions are safe. Swimming can change by water level, rain, and staff instructions at the reserve.
After the waterfall, we take you for a traditional lunch at a local organic farm. This is not just a quick restaurant stop. It gives the day a quieter finish, with Costa Rican food, local ingredients, and time to relax before returning to your hotel.
The tour is listed at 6 hours. A minimum of 2 people per booking is required.
Our local recommendation
Choose this tour if you want the main Arenal nature highlights without joining a shared bus tour. The private guide is the real value here.
Mistico is best when you are patient. Wildlife does not appear on command, so a slower pace often works better than covering the trail fast.
For the waterfall, bring shoes with grip. The stairs are well built, but they can feel humid and tiring on the way back up.
We also recommend starting early when possible. Morning tours usually give you cooler temperatures and better timing before the busiest waterfall hours.
Is this for you?
This tour is a good fit for couples, families, photographers, birdwatchers, and travelers who want a private guide all day. It also works well if your group has mixed interests.
It is not the best fit if you want a flat, easy walking day. Mistico is manageable for many travelers, but La Fortuna Waterfall requires a long stair descent and climb.
Children can join, but adults should consider the stairs before booking with younger kids. Guests with knee problems, limited mobility, or strong difficulty with stairs may prefer a softer private nature tour.
This tour is also weather-dependent. Rain can make the forest active, but it may affect volcano views and waterfall swimming.
FAQ
Is this tour fully private?
Yes. Your guide and transportation are reserved for your group. The attractions themselves are public reserves, so other visitors may be present.
How difficult is the walk at Mistico Hanging Bridges?
The Mistico trail is moderate and well maintained. The full route is about 3.2 km / 2 miles, with bridges, gentle slopes, and rainforest paths.

The waterfall visit is more physical than Mistico. You must walk down more than 500 steps, then climb them back up after visiting the base.
Can we swim at La Fortuna Waterfall?
Usually, guests can swim in permitted river areas. Still, swimming depends on water level, weather, and safety instructions on the day of your visit.
