If you're looking for a relaxed, family-friendly way to see wildlife without spending a large part of your activity budget, this is one of the experiences we really like recommending.

The walk itself is easygoing: a local guide leads you along a reforested nature trail while looking through the trees for wild two- and three-toed sloths.

But what makes this experience stand out to us is what happens afterward.

Instead of ending as soon as the wildlife walk is over, the visit shifts into something more personal — fresh sugarcane juice, making your own tortilla with Doña Elith, and a short introduction to traditional medicinal plants.

It feels less like checking “sloths” off a list and more like spending a couple of hours getting to know a small piece of La Fortuna.

Why We Recommend It

There are several places around La Fortuna where you can look for sloths.

We like this one because the experience doesn't feel built around rushing from one animal sighting to the next.

The property has been reforested and protected over many years, creating natural habitat for wildlife. The trail is only about 1.5 km, so the emphasis is on slowing down, looking carefully and letting your guide show you the things that would be easy to walk past on your own.

For families, that's a particularly nice balance.

The walk isn't the whole experience, and children don't have to spend several hours doing the same thing. Once the wildlife portion finishes, the pace changes and everyone gets to participate in something hands-on.

And at this price point, we think it offers a lot of experience for the money.

What the Experience Feels Like

Start by Looking Up

The walk begins along a peaceful trail surrounded by regenerating tropical vegetation.

Your guide knows where to look, but finding sloths still requires patience.

Sometimes the first thing you notice isn't an animal at all — it may be a branch that looks slightly different, movement among the leaves or your guide stopping and pointing toward something high in the canopy.

Both two-toed and three-toed sloths live naturally in the area.

They aren't handled, fed or brought closer for photographs. Observation takes place from a respectful distance, which is exactly how we prefer wildlife experiences to work.

Depending on the day, other animals may also appear along the trail.

But this is nature, not a zoo, so we never recommend arriving with a guaranteed wildlife checklist.

After looking for wildlife, you get a small taste of rural Costa Rican tradition.

You'll have the opportunity to press fresh sugarcane and taste the juice, then join Doña Elith to prepare your own tortilla.

It's simple, hands-on and especially fun when you're traveling with children.

There is something very different about finishing a wildlife tour sitting down with something you've just helped make rather than simply walking back to the parking lot.

The experience also includes a visit to a medicinal plant garden, where you get another small glimpse into traditional knowledge connected to plants grown and used locally.

None of these elements are elaborate — and that's part of why we like them.

Don't rush the wildlife walk.

Sloths are very good at looking like part of the tree, and some of the best moments happen when everyone stops, stays quiet and gives the guide time to scan the canopy.

If you're visiting with children, the tortilla-making portion is a nice reason not to worry if their attention starts to drift after the nature walk — the experience changes just when it needs to.
