Overview

Discover Arenal: Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Mistico Hanging Bridges is the full private nature day for travelers who want the three main Arenal highlights done well.
First, we walk old volcanic ground near Arenal Volcano.
Then, we descend to La Fortuna Waterfall.
After lunch, we finish above the rainforest at Mistico Hanging Bridges.

What you'll experience

We start with private pickup at your hotel in the Arenal or La Fortuna area. The usual departure time is 8:00 AM, but your exact pickup time depends on your location.

Once everyone is ready, we head toward the volcano side of Arenal. This first part of the day is the most physical, so it works well before the heat builds.

The volcano hike takes place on a private reserve trail connected to the 1968 eruption landscape. You walk over volcanic rock, forest paths, and open sections with views toward Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal when the weather is clear.

Our guide explains what happened during Arenal’s active years. You also see how the forest has grown back around the old lava fields.

Then we continue to La Fortuna Waterfall. This stop changes the rhythm completely. Instead of walking over lava rock, you descend into a green canyon carved by the Fortuna River.

The waterfall drops about 70 meters / 230 feet. To reach the base, we walk down roughly 530 steps. Going down feels steady, but the climb back up takes effort.

At the bottom, you can take photos, rest by the river, or swim in permitted areas when conditions are safe. Heavy rain or strong current can change swimming access.

After the waterfall, we slow down for lunch at a local organic farm. This is a good break between the two more active walks. The meal focuses on Costa Rican food, local ingredients, and time to reset before the afternoon.

Next, we drive to Mistico Hanging Bridges. The main trail covers about 3.2 km / 2 miles through rainforest, with bridges that move between the forest floor and canopy level.

This final stop is more about observation than effort. Our guide uses spotting equipment to look for birds, monkeys, insects, reptiles, and sloths when they are active.

The official route includes 16 bridges at different heights. Some sections feel enclosed by forest. Others open toward the canopy, the volcano side, or Lake Arenal.

This private format helps throughout the day. We can adjust the pace, pause for wildlife, shorten stops when needed, or give more time to the place your group enjoys most.

The full experience lasts about 7 hours. The private rate is currently listed at $240 + tax, with all entrance fees, private transportation, certified naturalist guide, hydration, spotting gear, and organic lunch included.

Our local recommendation

Choose Discover Arenal: Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Mistico Hanging Bridges if you want the most complete Arenal nature day without joining a shared group.

It is ideal when you have limited time and want volcano trails, the waterfall, and hanging bridges in one plan.

Start early and wear real walking shoes. This day includes lava trails, stairs, rainforest paths, and humid weather.

Bring a swimsuit and towel for the waterfall. Also bring a rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, and dry clothes for after swimming.

This tour is better when you do not rush it. The value is not only visiting three places. It is having a guide connect the geology, wildlife, forest, and local food into one day.

Is this for you?

This tour is a good fit for couples, families, photographers, first-time visitors, and travelers who want Arenal’s main nature highlights with a private guide.

It is not the best fit if you want an easy, low-walking day. The waterfall stairs are the hardest part, especially on the way back up.

Guests should be comfortable walking on natural trails and climbing many steps. Children can enjoy it, but adults should consider the length of the day and the waterfall climb.

Weather also matters. Rain can make the rainforest active, but it may hide the volcano and change swimming conditions at the waterfall.
