Overview

This Private Volcano Sloth Tour brings together two sides of Arenal that feel completely different.
First, you walk through old volcanic terrain near Arenal Volcano.
Then, you slow the day down on a sloth-focused wildlife trail.
It is part geology, part rainforest, and fully guided at your pace.

What you'll experience

We start with private pickup at your hotel or vacation rental near La Fortuna. Your exact pickup time is confirmed after booking, since drive times depend on your location.

Once everyone is ready, we head toward the Arenal Volcano area. Depending on trail conditions and your group’s pace, the hike may take place in the national park or a nearby private reserve with access to old lava flows.

The volcano section is not just a viewpoint stop. Our guide walks with you through secondary rainforest, volcanic rock, and forest that has grown back after past eruptions.

Along the way, we talk about Arenal’s active years, the lava fields, and how the forest returned around the volcano. On clear days, you may also see Lake Arenal from some trail sections.

Then we shift from volcano landscapes to wildlife. After the hike, we continue to a private ecological project known for sloth watching near La Fortuna.

This second walk is easier and mostly flat. Our guide uses a spotting scope to search the canopy for both two-toed and three-toed sloths.

The pace changes here. Instead of covering distance, we slow down and look carefully. Sloths can be high, hidden, curled into branches, or feeding quietly.

Wildlife sightings depend on the day, but the area may also offer toucans, monkeys, frogs, birds, insects, and tropical plants. We never rush the stop when animals are active.

After the wildlife walk, we continue to a local organic farm restaurant for a typical Costa Rican lunch. This gives the day a softer ending after the volcano trail.

The full experience lasts about 6 hours. A minimum of 2 people per booking is required, and the listed minimum age is +5.

Our local recommendation

Choose this tour if you want volcano scenery and wildlife in one private day. It is especially good when your group has mixed interests.

The volcano hike gives you the physical part of the morning. Then the sloth trail gives you a slower, more observation-based experience.

We recommend starting early when possible. Morning timing can help with cooler walking conditions and better chances of clear volcano views.

Wear closed-toe hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers. Bring a rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, and a camera or phone for scope photos.

Is this for you?

This tour is a good fit for couples, families, photographers, birdwatchers, and travelers who want a private naturalist guide. It also works well for guests who want more context than a standard sightseeing stop.

It is not the best fit if you want a very short or fully flat tour. The sloth trail is easier, but the volcano section includes natural terrain, rocks, and uneven paths.

Children can join, but they should be comfortable walking and listening to guide instructions. Wildlife watching also requires patience.

This tour is weather-dependent. Rain can make the forest active, but it may limit volcano visibility. Sloth sightings are common in the right habitat, but exact wildlife behavior cannot be controlled.

FAQ

Is this tour fully private?

Yes. Your guide and transportation are reserved for your group. The parks and reserves are public or shared spaces, so other visitors may be present.

Which volcano trail do we visit?

The route may use Arenal Volcano National Park or a nearby private reserve with lava-flow access. The final choice depends on trail conditions, availability, and your group’s pace.

Will we see sloths?

The tour visits a sloth-focused ecological area where both two-toed and three-toed sloths are commonly observed. Still, they are wild animals, so exact sightings cannot be forced.

How difficult is the volcano hike?

The volcano hike is moderate. Expect natural trails, uneven footing, volcanic rock, and some warm or humid conditions.
