Private Volcano Hike and Sloth Tour

This private experience brings together two very different sides of Arenal in one day.

You begin around the volcano, walking through forest and old volcanic terrain while learning how Arenal shaped the landscape you see today.

Later, the pace changes completely as you move onto a quieter wildlife trail where the goal is no longer covering distance — it's slowing down and looking carefully for sloths and other rainforest life.

We like this combination because it gives you both context and wildlife without trying to pack too many stops into the day.

What you'll experience

We start with private pickup at your hotel or vacation rental around La Fortuna. Your exact pickup time is confirmed after booking, since driving times vary depending on where you're staying.

From there, we head toward the Arenal Volcano area.

Depending on trail conditions, availability and your group's pace, the hike may take place inside Arenal Volcano National Park or at a nearby private reserve with access to old lava-flow terrain.

This first part of the day is about more than reaching a viewpoint.

Your guide walks with you through secondary rainforest, volcanic rock and areas where the forest has gradually returned after Arenal's more active years. Along the way, you'll learn about the eruptions that changed this region, the old lava fields and how nature recovered around them.

On clear days, some sections may also open toward Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

We always remind guests that the volcano has its own schedule. Clouds can arrive quickly in Arenal, so a completely clear view is never something we promise.

After the volcano hike, the experience changes pace.

We continue to a private ecological area near La Fortuna known for sloth observation. The trail here is easier and mostly flat, which gives your legs a break after the volcano and allows everyone to focus more on what is happening above them.

This is not a walk where covering distance matters.

Your naturalist guide uses a spotting scope and trained eyes to search the canopy for both two-toed and three-toed sloths.

Sometimes they are surprisingly visible. Other times, what looks like a dark patch of leaves turns out to be a sloth curled high in the branches.

That slower pace is part of what we enjoy about this stop.

Depending on wildlife activity, you may also encounter toucans, monkeys, frogs, birds, insects and other tropical species.

Wildlife is never guaranteed, and we prefer to be transparent about that. These are wild animals moving freely through their habitat, which is also what makes each visit different.

After the wildlife walk, we finish with a traditional Costa Rican lunch at a local organic farm restaurant.

We like having lunch at the end rather than rushing directly back to your accommodation. It gives the day a quieter finish after the hiking and wildlife observation, with time to sit down, eat and relax before returning to your stay.

The complete experience lasts approximately 6 hours.

Our local recommendation

We usually recommend this experience when guests tell us they want to see the volcano and wildlife but don't necessarily want a long full-day itinerary with several major attractions.

The combination works especially well because the two parts feel so different.

The volcano hike gives you the more active side of the morning — natural trails, volcanic terrain and the story behind Arenal's landscape.

Then the sloth walk intentionally slows everything down.

Instead of concentrating on how far you've walked, you start paying attention to individual trees, movement in the canopy and the small details that are easy to overlook without a guide.

For groups with mixed interests, we think that balance is one of the strongest reasons to choose this tour.

Someone who enjoys hiking gets the volcano. Someone whose priority is wildlife still gets dedicated observation time. And because the experience is private, your guide can adjust the pace around your group rather than following a fixed shared-tour rhythm.

When possible, we prefer an earlier start.

Morning temperatures are generally more comfortable for the volcano portion, and earlier timing may improve your chances of catching clearer views before clouds build around the mountain.

Wear proper closed-toe walking shoes. The sloth trail is relatively easy, but the volcano portion includes natural surfaces, rocks and uneven terrain.

• Prefer a private naturalist guide.
• Enjoy walking but don't necessarily want an extremely demanding hiking day.
• Are especially interested in sloths, birds or rainforest wildlife.
• Like learning about the destination rather than simply visiting a viewpoint.
• Have a group with different interests.
• Want a nature experience that fits comfortably into roughly half a day plus lunch.

We would consider another option if you:

• Want a completely flat or very short walking experience.
• Have significant mobility limitations or difficulty on uneven natural terrain.
• Want to spend most of your day hiking.
• Prefer several major attractions packed into one full day.
• Expect guaranteed sloth or volcano sightings.

Children can participate, but they should be comfortable walking on natural trails and able to slow down during wildlife observation.

Patience matters on the sloth portion. Sometimes the most interesting sightings happen because the group stops rather than keeps moving.

Weather also plays a role.

Rain can make the rainforest especially active, but clouds may reduce volcano visibility. Sloths and other wildlife live freely in the area, so exact sightings and behavior can never be guaranteed.
