Overview
Pure Trek Canyoning is the wet, loud, rope-and-waterfall side of Arenal.
You are not watching the rainforest from a trail.
You are stepping into a canyon, clipping into ropes, and dropping through moving water.
This is active, safe, messy, and much more rappelling than hiking.
What you'll experience
We start with pickup from your La Fortuna hotel or vacation rental. Then we head toward the Pure Trek base, where certified guides fit you with your helmet, harness, gloves, and canyoning gear.
Before the first drop, we walk you through the technique. You do not need rappelling experience. Our guides control the safety systems, explain each step, and stay with you at every platform.
This half-day canyoning tour includes 4 rappels in a rainforest canyon. The route combines 3 rainforest waterfalls and 1 rock wall, so every descent feels different. Some sections are loud and full of spray. Others give you a moment to look around before the next rope.
Then comes the Monkey Drop, the part guests usually talk about first. You are clipped in, lowered fast, and dropped into a shallow pool with the guides waiting below. It is quick, playful, and usually the moment nervous travelers start laughing.
Between rappels, we move through jungle trails inside the canyon. Expect wet rocks, moving water, and short walks between platforms. At the end, there is a 450-meter hike out of the canyon before returning to the base.
Your tour includes a Costa Rican lunch at Pure Trek headquarters. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available when requested in advance. Towels are also provided after the tour, and professional photos are available for purchase.
Our local recommendation
Choose the morning tour if you want the rest of the day open for hot springs, a slow lunch, or a relaxed afternoon in La Fortuna. It also gives families more energy for the canyon.
Wear secure closed-toe shoes that can get fully wet. Bring dry clothes for after the tour. This is not a dry tour, and that is exactly the point.
Is this for you?
This tour is a great fit if you want real adventure without needing technical experience. It works well for active families, first-time rappellers, teens, couples, and travelers who want a bigger adrenaline moment in La Fortuna.
It is not the best fit if you want a gentle waterfall walk, dislike heights, or have limited mobility. A moderate fitness level is enough, but you should be comfortable walking on wet terrain and climbing out of the canyon.
