A Hike Worth Leaving Arenal For

There are places we recommend because they're convenient.

Rio Celeste isn't one of them.

You travel beyond La Fortuna, hike through the rainforest of Tenorio Volcano National Park and earn the views along the way.

But when the river finally appears through the forest in that unmistakable turquoise-blue color, it's easy to understand why so many travelers make the trip.

The waterfall is the photograph most people recognize, but we think the full experience is better than simply reaching one viewpoint.

You'll continue through the forest toward Laguna Azul, areas of volcanic activity and eventually Los Teñideros — the point where the river's famous color phenomenon begins.

If you enjoy hiking and want to dedicate part of your Arenal stay to one of Costa Rica's most unusual natural landscapes, this is a day we'd seriously consider.

Why We Recommend Rio Celeste

Rio Celeste is far enough from La Fortuna that we don't automatically recommend it to every guest.

That's actually part of our criteria.

If you only have one or two days in Arenal, there may be experiences closer to your stay that make better use of your time.

But if you have a little more room in your itinerary and enjoy hiking, this is one of the places that can justify the drive.

The reason isn't only the waterfall.

The national park trail takes you through primary rainforest and several completely different natural features — the waterfall, the intensely colored river, Laguna Azul, volcanic gas activity and Los Teñideros. Canoa Aventura's guided experience also focuses on the geology, biology and ecology behind what you're seeing rather than treating the visit simply as a photo stop.

For us, that's the right way to experience Rio Celeste.

The Day Starts Before the Trail

From La Fortuna, the drive toward Tenorio Volcano National Park takes you away from the busier Arenal tourism area and into a greener, more rural part of northern Costa Rica.

Canoa Aventura estimates the drive at around an hour and a half from La Fortuna.

By the time you reach the park, the landscape already feels different.

Then the real reason for coming begins.

First, Follow the Forest Toward the Waterfall

The trail enters dense rainforest before reaching the stairs leading toward the Rio Celeste Waterfall viewpoint.

This is the image most guests have seen before they arrive.

Blue water drops through deep green forest below you, and even though you've probably already seen dozens of photos online, seeing the color inside the surrounding rainforest still feels different.

Take your time here.

This isn't a place we'd recommend rushing simply to get to the next attraction.

But Don't Turn Around at the Waterfall

This is an important part of our recommendation.

Some visitors think Rio Celeste is the waterfall.

It isn't.

Continue along the trail and the experience becomes much more interesting.

You'll pass through rainforest toward Laguna Azul and the Borbollones, where volcanic gases escape through the river area and remind you that you're walking through the landscape of Tenorio Volcano.

Then comes the part we think gives the entire hike context.

Los Teñideros: Where the River Changes

At Los Teñideros, two streams meet.

This is the point where the visual phenomenon that gives Rio Celeste its famous color begins.

What looks almost artificial is actually a natural optical process created when waters with different characteristics meet and suspended mineral particles scatter light.

Without a guide, it's easy to arrive, look at the blue water and leave with only the photograph.

With someone explaining what you're seeing, the place becomes much more interesting.

That's one of the strongest reasons we like doing Rio Celeste as a guided hike.

Best for
Nature lovers, photographers, couples, families comfortable with hiking and guests who have enough time in Arenal for a day trip.

Why we like it
Rio Celeste doesn't look like another variation of the Arenal landscape. The color of the river, volcanic features and rainforest make it feel like a genuinely different destination.

What makes the guided option worthwhile
The guide adds context to the geology, ecology and wildlife instead of turning the visit into a walk between viewpoints.

Activity level
Moderate. The full national-park route is approximately 6 km round trip and normally requires around 3 hours on the trail.

Good to know
Expect stairs, natural trail conditions and potentially muddy or slippery sections, particularly during rainy weather.

Important
Swimming is not permitted inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, including Rio Celeste.

• You'd rather understand the destination with a guide than simply visit the waterfall.
• Your group is comfortable walking several kilometers on natural terrain.

We'd Consider Another Option If...

• You only have one short day in Arenal.
• Someone in your group struggles significantly with stairs or uneven trails.
• You're looking for a very easy nature walk.
• Swimming at the attraction is important to you.
• You mainly want wildlife observation.
• You don't enjoy spending travel time reaching an attraction.
• Your group would rather combine several shorter activities closer to La Fortuna.

Something We Think Guests Should Know

Rio Celeste Is More Than a Waterfall Stop

If you're going to make the trip from La Fortuna, we recommend experiencing the complete national-park route rather than treating the waterfall as a quick photo opportunity.

The official trail connects the waterfall with the viewpoint, Laguna Azul, Borbollones and Los Teñideros. The full route is approximately 6 km round trip.

That's where the value of the tour really comes from.

You leave understanding why the river looks the way it does, not simply knowing that it photographs beautifully.

A Few Tips From Us

Wear real walking shoes.
This isn't the day for casual sandals. Rainforest terrain and stairs can become slick.

Bring a rain jacket even if La Fortuna looks sunny.
Tenorio has its own weather.

Bring a reusable water bottle.
The operator provides water refills and the national park restricts single-use plastics.

Don't pack your swimsuit for the national park.
Swimming in Rio Celeste is prohibited inside the protected area.

Eat breakfast.
You're traveling and hiking before the included Costa Rican lunch.

Bring your camera — but don't let the waterfall be the only thing you photograph.
The forest, lagoon and Teñideros are part of what makes the full hike worthwhile.
