The Maquique Canyoning Adventure near La Fortuna combines five rappels, three waterfalls, two rain forest zip-lines, and a route designed to progress from smaller descents to the biggest challenge at the end. No previous rappelling experience is required.

Start Small. Finish With the Big Waterfall.

You don't begin by stepping straight over the largest drop.

The route is progressive. Your guides first explain the equipment, body position, braking technique, and how to control your descent. Then, each rappel gives you a chance to become more comfortable before moving on to the next challenge.

As the canyon develops, the route moves into the waterfalls before finishing with an approximately 60-meter waterfall rappel.

And rappelling isn't the only part of the experience. Two rain forest zip-lines — approximately 160 and 400 meters — are also built into the route.

This is a good fit if you want something more active than simply seeing the rain forest from a trail or viewpoint.

Good to Know Before You Go

Tour times: Maquique currently advertises departures at 7:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m., subject to availability and operating conditions.

First time rappelling? That's fine. Eligible beginners are welcome and receive instructions before entering the canyon.

Minimum advertised age: 5 years. For children close to the minimum age, participation should be confirmed before booking because canyon conditions, individual suitability, and safety requirements can affect participation.

Expect to get wet: This is an active canyon and waterfall experience, so dress accordingly. Quick-dry clothing and secure footwear with good grip are recommended. Closed-toe footwear offers better protection on rocks and uneven terrain. Bring a change of clothes and towel for afterward.

What if it rains? Normal tropical rain does not automatically cancel canyoning. However, heavy rainfall can change canyon conditions quickly, so the operator may delay, modify, or cancel the activity when conditions are not appropriate.

Transportation: Complimentary transportation is available from hotels and accommodations in or near La Fortuna. If you're staying farther away, pickup should be confirmed before booking. You can also drive to Maquique's designated meeting point, where free secure parking is available.
