Overview

This Wave Expeditions Rafting tour covers 13 kilometers of the Balsa River. The route includes 22 Class II and III rapids and approximately two hours on the water.

Start with the stronger rapids, learn to move as one crew, and settle into the river’s rhythm.

No previous rafting experience is required. However, every participant must paddle and respond to the guide’s commands.

What you’ll experience

We collect guests from selected accommodations in La Fortuna before driving approximately 45 minutes to the river. Some distant hotels require an additional transportation fee.

At the put-in point, your guides distribute helmets, flotation vests, and paddles. Then they explain the safety commands, correct body position, and what to do if someone falls into the water.

After a short practice, each crew enters the Balsa River with a certified bilingual guide.

The Wave Expeditions Rafting route covers 13 kilometers and 22 rapids. The first half contains the stronger Class III sections, with regular waves and quick paddle commands.

Later, the river eases into more Class II water. These calmer sections offer time to recover and look toward the forested banks.

Sloths, monkeys, lizards, butterflies, and tropical birds may appear along the route. Wildlife sightings are possible, but never guaranteed.

Partway through the descent, we stop for fresh fruit and drinks. Swimming or jumping into the water may be offered when conditions allow.

After approximately two hours on the river, we change into dry clothes and continue to lunch. A traditional Costa Rican meal and a short sugarcane demonstration complete the experience.

Recent guests often mention the clear instructions, energetic guides, river photographs, lunch, and the contrast between the faster and calmer halves of the route.

Our local recommendation

Wear secure water shoes or sandals with heel straps. Your footwear must remain attached in moving water.

Arrive wearing a swimsuit or quick-drying clothing. Keep a towel and complete change of clothes in the transport vehicle.

The opening section becomes active quickly. Listen carefully during the safety briefing instead of waiting until the first rapid to learn the commands.

Apply sunscreen before reaching the river. Avoid carrying phones, loose jewelry, or valuables inside the raft.

Is this for you?

Choose Wave Expeditions Rafting when you want an accessible first rafting experience with regular Class II and III white water.

It works well for families, couples, solo travelers, and first-time rafters. The published minimum age is eight years old.

This is not a passive river float. Everyone must paddle, maintain balance, and follow quick instructions during the stronger sections.

You should be comfortable getting completely wet. Falling into the river is possible, even with a guide and full safety equipment.

This experience may not suit pregnant travelers or guests with serious heart, back, neck, or mobility conditions.
