Welcome to La Fortuna!
I put this guide together with you in mind, combining the best of our area with the freedom to explore however suits you best. Some guests prefer having me along for a closer, more personal pace and the kind of local stories you only pick up from living here. Others prefer taking their own car and heading out on their own terms. Neither option is better than the other — it just depends on the kind of trip you’re looking for.
Here are the best options to make the most of each day, whether you decide to come with me or go it alone.
1. Experiences Best Done Together (Led by Your Host)
These are the activities I most enjoy sharing with my guests. We travel in my vehicle, so you don’t have to worry about driving, finding parking, or figuring out the right trailhead — I take care of the logistics while you enjoy the scenery. Along the way, I’ll share local stories, bits of trivia about the volcano, and we’ll move at whatever pace feels most comfortable to you, no rush.
La Fortuna Waterfall: An impressive 70-meter waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. Great for taking the stairs down at a relaxed pace, snapping photos, and swimming in the river pools.
Arenal Volcano National Park (1968 Lava Trail): A fascinating hike over the lava fields from the historic 1968 eruption, with striking views of the volcano and Lake Arenal.
Hanging Bridges (Mistico Park): A magical walk above the rainforest canopy, excellent for birdwatching and taking in the surrounding nature.
Río Celeste Excursion (Tenorio Volcano National Park): An unforgettable full-day excursion to discover the turquoise river and its striking «teñidero» (the spot where the river’s colors form).
A personal note on these four: if it’s your first time in La Fortuna and you’re not sure where to start, the La Fortuna Waterfall and the 1968 Lava Trail are my favorite combination for introducing the area — they’re close to each other, don’t demand too much physical effort, and give you a full sense of what makes this place special. Río Celeste, on the other hand, I like to save for once you’ve had a day or two to settle in — it’s a longer day, and enjoying it properly is easier when you’re not starting your trip already tired.
2. Experiences to Do On Your Own (With Your Own Vehicle)
If you’d rather have full independence and explore at your own pace with your car, these options come with safe routes, well-marked access, and activities guided directly by local experts on-site — all you need to do is show up.
- Afternoon at the Geothermal Hot Springs: whether at an exclusive resort or one of the area’s thermal centers, all you need to do is drive over, check in, and enjoy the relaxing properties of the volcanic water. A perfect way to close out any active day.
- Coffee & Chocolate Tours: visits to local farms where you’ll learn, hands-on, about Costa Rica’s cacao and coffee traditions, tastings included. A good option for a more relaxed morning or afternoon.
- Nighttime Wildlife Walks: private reservations where specialized guides with flashlights will show you nocturnal wildlife — frogs, insects, and sloths included. A completely different way to experience the area after dark.
- Adrenaline Adventures (Canopy / Zipline): adventure parks like Sky Adventures, where you can drive yourself and take on the zipline circuits with certified equipment and instructors.
3. Suggested Itineraries: Smooth Full-Day Combinations
To make the most of each day without heavy transfers or downtime, these pairings and trios of activities are designed to flow naturally into one another:
1. The Classic Essentials (Volcano + Waterfall + Hot Springs) Start the morning hiking the Arenal Volcano trails in the cool early air, follow up midday with a refreshing visit to La Fortuna Waterfall, and close the afternoon relaxing at the hot springs. This is the itinerary I recommend most for a full first day in the area.
2. The Heights Combination (Hanging Bridges + Adventure) Dedicate the morning to the Hanging Bridges at Mistico Park for wildlife spotting, grab lunch in town, and spend the afternoon on a canopy or zipline tour. A great day for anyone looking to mix calm nature time with a bit of adrenaline.
3. Water Adventure & Flavor (Rafting + Chocolate Tour) Take a guided half-day rafting tour in the morning (run by specialists), and slow things down in the afternoon with a relaxed visit to a chocolate farm. Ideal if you want some action without the day feeling exhausting.
4. Nature & Mystery (Safari Float + Night Walk) Enjoy a calm morning floating on a motor-free raft down the Peñas Blancas River to spot sloths and birds, rest in the afternoon, and close the day with a guided night walk. A day built for those who prefer a more contemplative pace.
5. The Turquoise Getaway (Río Celeste + Relax) A full day dedicated to hiking Tenorio Volcano National Park to admire Río Celeste, returning to La Fortuna in time for a quiet dinner and rest. I save this one for once you’ve already got a day or two of the trip under your belt.
