Overview
Rainforest Falls is the wetter, wilder cousin of classic waterfall rappelling.
This tour goes deeper into the river canyon.
You rappel waterfalls, swim through natural pools, and choose your own level on the jumps.
Nothing here feels like a quick photo stop.
What you'll experience
We start with pickup from your La Fortuna hotel or vacation rental. Then we drive toward La Vieja, a rural area about 37 kilometers southeast of town.
The ride takes you away from the busy center of La Fortuna. Once we reach the rainforest area, your guides help you gear up with a helmet, harness, gloves, and safety equipment.
Before the first descent, we explain the rope system and body position. You do not need previous rappelling experience. You do need to feel comfortable around water, rocks, and uneven rainforest trails.
The first major drop is a 32-meter waterfall rappel. You lower beside the falling water, then finish in the river below. It is a strong start, but our guides control the pace and stay with you through each step.
Once you are in the canyon, the tour changes rhythm. You move from rope sections to river pools, short jungle walks, and optional jumps. The jumps range from 1 to 10 meters, and none of them are mandatory.
This is where Rainforest Falls feels different from our regular canyoning tour. There is more swimming, more river time, and more choice. Some guests jump every time. Others skip the bigger jumps and enjoy the pools from below.
The route also includes guided hikes between waterfalls and natural pools. You should expect wet rocks, metal steps, river crossings, and short climbs. This is not a passive sightseeing tour.
After the canyon, we return to our basecamp for a Costa Rican lunch. Snacks, hydration, tropical smoothies, and coffee are included during the experience. Lockers, outdoor showers, modern bathrooms, and towels are available after the tour.
Rainforest Falls lasts about 5 hours. Start times are usually 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, with a minimum age of 8 years old.
Our local recommendation
Choose Rainforest Falls if you want more water than the classic canyoning tour. It is the better option for travelers who like swimming holes, river movement, and jumps.
Wear secure shoes with real grip. Closed-toe water shoes, hiking shoes, or sturdy adventure sandals work well. Loose sandals and flip-flops do not belong in this canyon.
Bring dry clothes for after the tour. Contact lenses are better than glasses here, especially if you plan to jump.
Is this for you?
This tour is a strong fit for active families with older kids, teens, couples, and travelers who want a full river-canyon experience. It is also a good choice if you have already done the classic Pure Trek Canyoning tour and want something with more swimming.
It is not the best fit if you cannot swim, dislike jumping into water, or have trouble walking on rocks. The jumps are optional, but the wet terrain is not. You should have a moderate fitness level and be comfortable moving through a river environment.
Pregnant guests cannot participate. Guests with recent surgeries, back problems, heart conditions, or serious medical concerns should choose a gentler activity.
