Overview
Naturalist Sloth Expedition is a slow wildlife walk near La Fortuna.
This is not a hike where we try to cover distance.
Instead, we move quietly, scan the trees, and give the forest time to show itself.
The goal is simple: find sloths without rushing the moment.
What you'll experience
We start with pickup at your hotel or vacation rental near La Fortuna. Your exact pickup time is confirmed after booking, since travel time depends on your location.
Once everyone is ready, we drive to a private wildlife sanctuary near Arenal. The trail is designed for easy walking, so the focus stays on observation rather than physical effort.
Before the walk begins, our guide explains how to spot sloths in the canopy. They are often high, still, and partly hidden behind leaves.
Then we begin the search slowly. Our guide uses trained eyes and spotting equipment to look for sloths resting, feeding, or moving between branches.
Naturalist Sloth Expedition focuses on both two-toed and three-toed sloths. Sightings are usually reliable in this habitat, but exact behavior, distance, and activity change every day.
Once we find a sloth, we set up the scope. This lets you see details without walking too close or disturbing the animal.
You can also take photos through the spotting scope with your phone. This is often the easiest way to get a clear image, especially when the sloth is high in the trees.
Along the trail, we also look for toucans, tropical birds, iguanas, insects, and native plants. Depending on the day, we may also spot frogs, monkeys, butterflies, or other rainforest life.
Because this is private, the pace stays flexible. We can pause longer for photos, spend more time with an active animal, or move slowly with children and older travelers.
The experience includes private transportation, a certified private guide, sanctuary entrance fees, and bottled water.
The listed minimum age is +5, and a minimum of 2 people per booking is required.
Our local recommendation
Choose Naturalist Sloth Expedition if you want an easy wildlife experience with a private guide. It works well when your group wants nature without a long hike.
Morning is a good choice if you want cooler weather. Afternoon can also work well, especially when animals are easier to spot from known feeding trees.
Wear closed-toe shoes or sturdy sneakers. Bring rain gear, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera or phone for scope photos.
This tour works best when guests are patient. Sloth watching is not fast, and that is part of what makes it different.
Is this for you?
This tour is a good fit for families, photographers, wildlife lovers, seniors, and travelers who want a gentle private nature walk.
It is also a strong choice for guests who do not want steep trails. The walk is described as easy, with no long distances.
It is not the best fit if you want an adventure activity or a fast-paced hike. Most of the experience is quiet observation.
Children can join, but they should be comfortable walking calmly and waiting while the guide sets up the scope.
