Overview
ABC Canyoning Adventure builds up slowly, then finishes big.
You do not start with the tallest waterfall.
First, you learn the rope, feel the water, and get used to the canyon.
Then the route keeps growing until the final 230-foot rappel.
What you'll experience
We start with pickup in La Fortuna or meet at our ABC Canyoning office near town. If you drive yourself, secure parking is available at the meeting point.
Then we head toward the Pocosol Forest area. The canyon sits near the Children’s Eternal Rainforest and the Peñas Blancas River Canyon, about 35 to 40 minutes from La Fortuna.
Once we arrive, our guides fit you with your harness, helmet, gloves, and rappelling gear. We keep your bags safe while you are in the canyon.
Before the first descent, we give a clear safety talk. You learn how to sit into the harness, use your feet, and listen for guide signals. No previous rappelling experience is needed.
The route includes 5 waterfall rappels. It starts smaller, so beginners can build confidence before the higher drops.
Between rappels, you hike through rainforest trails, rocky sections, and wet canyon terrain. Expect roots, uneven ground, and places where you need to step carefully. This is part of the adventure, not just a transfer between platforms.
The final rappel is the reason many guests choose this tour. It drops up to 230 feet, making it the tallest confirmed waterfall rappel on this route. By the time you reach it, you have already practiced on the earlier descents.
Our guides stay positioned above and below each rappel. They manage the rope systems, coach nervous guests, and help the group keep moving at a safe pace.
After the canyon, we return for a traditional Costa Rican meal. The lunch usually includes rice, beans, plantains, vegetables, salad, pico de gallo, and beef in sauce. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.
Scheduled departures are usually 9:30 AM and 12:00 MD. The full experience is listed as 5 hours, including transportation, safety briefing, canyon time, and lunch.
Our local recommendation
Choose ABC Canyoning Adventure if you want the biggest final rappel among the canyoning options in La Fortuna. It is a good pick for travelers who want a stronger finish and do not mind hiking between waterfalls.
This tour feels more rugged than some canyoning routes. The canyon has real uphill sections, wet footing, and a final rappel that can feel intimidating from the edge.
Wear closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles. Bring clothes that can get soaked, plus a full dry outfit for after the tour. Avoid loose sandals.
Is this for you?
This tour is a good fit for active first-timers, couples, solo travelers, and families with confident older kids. You do not need technical experience, but you should be ready to hike on wet mountain trails.
It is not the best fit if you want a soft adventure or dislike heights. The last waterfall is tall, and the hike to reach it can be tiring.
ABC Canyoning lists a minimum age of 7 years old and a maximum age of 70 years old. There is also a 220 lb weight guideline, with flexibility if the waist measurement is under 43 inches.
This tour is not recommended for pregnant guests, travelers with low mobility, cardio-respiratory conditions, serious heart concerns, or recent back problems.
